Why We R Livin' Crazy!
I LOVE to read!! I'll read just about anything... cereal boxes, street signs, billboards, obituaries. I even read the classified ads in the newspaper!! In the summer it's just crazy. I read a ton of books from our church library. But as the summer wanes, I tire of the same christian "romance", historical fiction genre. So this summer, I decided to re-read "Crazy Love" by Francis Chan. Then Scott told me I should read "Radical" by David Platt. Being the seminary student that he is, I'm always a little hesitant about the books he suggests for me to read. They are so... um... studious!! I did not jump into reading "Radical" right away. I waited until there was nothing left for my eyes to gaze at, and then I "settled" for what was on hand. If I had known what was in that book, I would have picked it up gladly the first time he told me about it!!
"Radical: Taking Back Your Faith from the American Dream" is the official book title. Here is a little tid-bit into the premise of the book: "It's easy for American Christians to forget how Jesus said his followers would actually live, what their new lifestyle would actually look like. They would, he said, leave behind security, money, convenience, even family for him. They would abandon everything for the gospel. They would take up their crosses daily... but who do you know who lives like that? Do you? In Radical, David Platt challenges you to consider with an open heart how we have manipulated the gospel to fit our cultural preferences. He shows us what Jesus actaully said about being his disciple--then invites you to believe and obey what you have heard. Finally, he urges you to join in The Radical Experiment--a one-year journey in authentic discipleship that will transform how you live in a world that desperatley needs the Good News Jesus came to bring."
And that brings us to this blog and why we started it. Our family has decided to participate in the one-year adventure called The Radical Experiment. It is a year long commitment to five specific challenges:
*To pray for the entire world
*To read through the entire Word
*To commit our lives to multiplying community
*To sacrifice our money for a specific purpose
*To give our time in another context
Our start date was September 1st. So far, not too much has changed in the daily life of our family. But we have made some decisions as a family that will effect us in the months to come. We have decided to double our monthly giving. To do so, we have talked about what kinds of things we could "sacrifice" as a family for the next year. Some ideas are:
*No buying any new DVD's for the year
*No going out to lunch after church on Sunday
*Conserving electricity to save money
*Buying only things that are necessary
As the year progresses, these "sacrifices" will ebb and flow. We really want to get the kids involved in the whole process, so they also will be participating in updating this blog. And that's why We R Livin' Crazy!
I am both excited and a little apprehensive to see what this year has in store for us. Excited, because I know God has great plans for our family. Apprehensive, because I know God has great plans for our family!! :) I just hope and pray that I am willing and able to follow His calling, whatever that may be. I also hope and pray that "my turn" at posting to this blog will not always have to follow my scholarly, seminary attending, youth pastor husband. I'm just a chatty homeschool mom with too many thoughts and opinions and not enough wise words to express them all properly.
Until next time...
