We all scream for Ice Cream!!

I'm a three-name ice cream kind of gal.  You know.  Those yummy flavors that have three words in their name... Chocolate Malted Crunch, Tin Roof Sundae, German Chocolate Cake.  And I love lots of "stuff" in my frozen dessert... chocolate covered peanuts, caramel swirl, mini malt balls, chocolate chips, brownie chunks, marshmallows.  Of course it would be my luck that I married a vanilla man.  Yes, Scott's absolute favorite flavor of ice cream is plain old vanilla.  Bleh!  But in my quest to not weigh 7,000 lbs, I decided that I would buy only boring, er... I mean vanilla ice cream for the family, as it would keep me from eating it.  Once in awhile we branch out and get chocolate chip.  Oooohh!!  And if Taralyn is choosing, we get cookies and cream.  Bigger OOOOOOOhhhhhh!!!  But both those flavors start with vanilla ice cream and only have one other "extra", so they are somewhat acceptable to vanilla man.

In our Radical Experiment quest to "live with less to give away more", one area I thought would be easy to trim our budget was in our grocery shopping.  And one area I decided to trim it was in the ice cream area.  I do a lot of our grocery shopping at Costco, where they just happen to sell the best vanilla ice cream in the world (And after 18 years of wedded bliss to vanilla man, I know my vanilla ice cream!).  But this fabulous, creamy vanilla ice cream comes at a cost.  It's not the cheapest ice cream out there.  So I decided to buy store-brand vanilla ice cream at Target instead.  We've been eating this ice cream since getting "radical" in September.  Last week, vanilla man informs me that he does not like the Market Pantry brand ice cream.  To which I sweetly responded, "Oh please!!  It's vanilla ice cream!  You can't give up your fancy vanilla ice cream for just one year?!"  I mean, it's not like I'm asking him to give up ice cream for a whole year!  Okay, so I'm not at all sweet.  And I really can't just pick on vanilla man here, because it has been difficult for all of us to give up some things that we are used to.  I stopped buying expensive hair products and it's not really working for me.  Most things in our cupboards now are store brands and not name brands.  And I've been realizing how truly spoiled we are!!  We have a tendency to think we "deserve" certain things or brands.  Since when did God promise us that if we followed Him we would be able to buy all the Big Sexy hair products we wanted?!

In fact, in Luke 6:24 Jesus tells us "rich folk" to be careful... "Woe to you who are rich, for you have already received your comfort."  If we are trying to fulfill ourselves with our "stuff" (which does not last) than our things may be the only reward we ever get.  Jesus also says in Luke 12:15, "Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his posessions."  Or in the creaminess of his vanilla ice cream.

If you are looking for some encouragement on how to live as a missional disciple, I would suggest you read one or all of the following books.  They are listed in order of easiest to read to really making you sit up and think kind of reading:

WEIRD by Craig Groeschel
RADICAL by David Platt
UNTAMED by Alan & Debra Hirsch

As for me, I'm on a quest to find a cheap vanilla ice cream that tastes good.  And inexpensive hair products that will make my fine, thin hair look bigger and sexier.  Any suggestions?

God bless your day!
Krystal
